Skull base tumors are not commonly seen in a primary care practice, yet it’s important for us to recognize them when they do present. These tumors can be either benign or malignant, however because of their proximity to important structures in the brain, even benign tumors can cause serious complications. Their presentation can be subtle, and they are frequently mistaken for other more commonly seen health problems. Which presenting symptoms should give us concern? What are some common physical exam findings associated with these tumors, and what’s the best initial imaging study to order? These are some of the questions I’ll be asking my guests, Dr. Jake Eide and Dr. Rijul Kshirsagar, both surgeons in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Mayo Clinic as we tackle “Skull Base Tumors.”
