Episode Description

Elyse talks with Kate Gonnella, Chief of Emergency Services at Burning Man, a yearly festival where close to 80,000 people gather in the Black Rock Desert, where temperatures can soar over 100 degrees during the day and dip below freezing at night. Kate's Emergency Services Department, along with the entire festival, is built from the ground up every year and fully dismantled just a few days later. Elyse and Kate talk about how she got involved in such a unique position, the challenges associated with running a team in a remote and temporary location, the planning that goes into construction of the department every year, and how listeners can learn more about volunteering.
