Jonathan Avery MD

Jonathan Avery, M.D., is the Vice Chair for Addiction Psychiatry, a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, the Stephen P. Tobin and Dr. Arnold M. Cooper Professor in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and the Program Director for the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Avery is the founder of the Weill Cornell Medicine/New York-Presbyterian Program for Substance Use and Stigma of Addiction. Dr. Avery’s academic work focuses on understanding and reducing stigma toward individuals with substance use disorders and developing interventions to improve clinicians’ attitudes and care for patients with addiction. He is also dedicated to educating physicians across specialties on the treatment of co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.

Dr. Avery is the Medical Director of the NBA’s Anti-Drug Program and the host of the Thriving with Addiction podcast, which features conversations with leading voices in science, medicine and recovery. He is the author of multiple books on addiction and stigma, including the forthcoming Thriving with Addiction: A New Roadmap for Lasting Recovery and Health (Prometheus Books, 2026).
